Lorene L. Gustafson - Aug. 11, 1917 - June 3, 2010

Lorene Gustafson of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at her home in Storm Lake.

Lorene Lucile Schmidt, the daughter of John and Alwine (Faustmann) Schmidt, was born in Galva, Iowa, on August 11, 1917. She was baptized on August 26, 1917, at the home of her parents by Pastor Henry Wehking of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hanover and confirmed by Pastor Wehking on March 29, 1931.

Lorene was a graduate of the Galva High School and Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. She taught in the elementary grades at Rembrandt, Iowa, until 1940.

Lorene was united in marriage to Marvin Fred Gustafson on June 9, 1940, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hanover, and they were blessed with two children: Dee and Roger. The family made their home in Rembrandt until 1968. In 1957, Lorene accepted a teaching position in the Sioux Rapids schools where she taught until 1968. During the summer of 1968, they moved to Storm Lake where Lorene was a teacher at West School until her retirement from teaching in 1975.

The family has always been members of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, having attended the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa, Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Lorene taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at various times during her life. She served in the local LWML offices and as Storm Lake LWML treasurer.

Lorene’s memory will always be loved, honored, and cherished by her family which includes: her daughter, Dee, and her husband, George B. Ryan, of Bloomington, Minnesota; her son, Roger, and his wife, Francine, of Chaska, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Kim (Bryan) Hughes, Michael (Julie) Ryan, Brian (Cheryl) Gustafson, Ann (Jeff) Wegner, Jill (Brian) Benson; seven great granddaughters: Sarah and Jynessa Hughes, Alyssa and Dana Ryan, Josie Gustafson, Haley Benson, and Cylee Wegner; two great grandsons: Dylan Hughes and Bode Benson; other extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin; her sister, Griselda; and her brother, Ervin.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. on June 8, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Hanover, rural Alta, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 2010, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake with the family present at that time.
