Kathleen Mary Ellis, 85, formerly of Storm Lake, died March 12, 2002, in the Pella Regional Health Center Long Term Care center in Pella where she had made her home since 1990.

Kathleen Mary Carney was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Buena Vista County to Frank and Sadie (Connell) Carney. She was the fourth child in a family of nine. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Storm Lake.

She graduated from Providence Consolidated High School, Sulphur Springs. She attended summer school at Buena Vista College, Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and the University of Iowa in Iowa City to obtain an elementary teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools in Buena Vista County and in the Schaller community school.

During WWII Kathleen returned to Storm Lake to make a home for her mother. She was employed by Firestone Company and Dodge-Plymouth Motors in office and credit work.

She married C. Oliver Ellis June 2, 1951, in St. Mary's church. Two children, Kathleen Ann and James Francis, were born to this union. Robert Oliver Ellis, young son of Oliver Ellis, was also a member of this family.

Mrs. Ellis returned to part-time employment after being a patient at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. She joined the news staff of the Storm Lake Register and Pilot-Tribune.

After the death of her husband on Aug. 26, 1971, Mrs. Ellis remained in the family home, 424 Lake Avenue. She became a full-time employee of the Storm Lake Newspapers as receptionist, classified advertising and subscription manager. She retired from the newspapers in Oct., 1985, and moved to Ames.

Three weeks after her move to Pella in 1990, she suffered a major stroke which necessitated her move to the Long Term Care unit at the Pella Regional Health Center where she had resided ever since. She made many friends among the residents and staff there.

Mrs. Ellis had been an active member of St. Mary's Guild, Catholic Daughters of America, Parent Teachers, Band Parents, Girl Scouts and Community Chest. She received the St. Anne's award for her work in Girl Scouting.

Her family includes a daughter, Kathy and her husband, Larry Peterson, Pella; two sons, James, Maple Grove, MN, and Robert and his wife, June, Marion; a step-daughter, Norma and her husband Allan Peters, Jefferson, WI; one sister, Evelyn Stevens, Tacoma, WA; one brother, John Carney, Atlanta, GA; 8 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; five brothers Francis, James, Richard, Charles and Paul Carney and a sister, Evelyn Grace Crotty.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 16th, 2002, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Storm Lake, with Reverend Douglas Klein officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
