Wednesday, March 20, 2002

Linnea H. Peterson, age 97, of Storm Lake, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Methodist Manor, Storm Lake, Iowa.

Linnea Hortense Bengston was born December 7, 1904, in Madrid, Iowa, the daughter of S. August and Ida (Nilsson) Bengston. Linnea's early childhood was spent in Madrid and Boone where her father was Boone County Treasurer.

With the early death of her father, Linnea moved with her mother and brother Waldermar to Des Moines where she attended school, graduating from East High and also a business school. She graduated with a secretarial degree and worked at Interstate Insurance and for many years at Anderson Furniture in Des Moines.

On March 24, 1946, she married George E. Peterson of rural Linn Grove, becoming a devoted farm wife.

In 1980 the couple retired and moved to Storm Lake where they opened their family home to begin the Storm Lake Evangelical Free Church.

After George's death, Linnea moved into the residential area of Methodist Manor where she enjoyed the people and activities. In February 1992, Linnea, out of necessity, moved to the health care center of Methodist Manor. She remained a resident there until her death.

Linnea accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior on May 4, 1924, and was a faithful child of the Lord and a great Bible scholar. She was a Sunday school teacher and youth leader for many years in the Penn Avenue and Highland Park Evangelical Free Churches in Des Moines. After moving to northwest Iowa, she was involved in the Center Grove Evangelical Free Church. While living in Storm Lake, Linnea became a charter member of the Storm Lake Evangelical Free Church. Linnea held offices in the Women's Missionary Society on the local, state and national levels of EFC.

Her hobbies were doing for others and corresponding with her many friends. She had a bubbly and joyful personality which attracted her to many people in her lifetime. She was active in the Buena Vista County Federated Club and on the board of the Linn Grove Public Library.

Linnea is survived by her loving and caring family: Charlotte A. Johnson, Storm Lake; Alvin Peterson, Newell; Mark and Patricia Johnson Kirby, Denison; Joe Kirby and family, Bellevue, Nebraska; two nieces: Marjorie and husband Jim Edwards, Des Moines, and Lois and husband Gary Thompson, Radcliffe; great-nephews: Kevin Edwards, Ryan and Kandy Edwards, all of Des Moines; great-nieces: Amy and Scott Chumbley, Ames, and Jill and Gregory Kohler, New York; great great-nephews: Zachary Edwards and Jeffrey Kohler; cousins in the Boone area; brothers-in-law: Oscar E. Peterson, Delbert and Alice Peterson, all of Storm Lake; sisters-in-law: Mildred Peterson, Mason City, and Elaine Peterson, Rockford, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother Waldermar and his wife Inez and an infant sister Lucille.

She had suffered almost thirteen years of failing health, the last six of which she was unable to communicate.

The funeral service was Monday, March 18th, 2002, at the Hope Evangelical Free Church with the Reverend Jim Hofman officiating. Burial was in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery.
