Verne Cavanaugh, 89, Michigan City, died March 15, 2002, at St. Anthony Memorial Center.

Mr. Cavanaugh was born in Alta on September 17, 1912, to Patrick and Margaret (McKenna) Cavanaugh. On June 29, 1946, in Elkhart, Ind., he married Eloise Willm,

Mr. Cavanaugh retired from the Indiana State Board of Health after 41 years of service. He was a member of Queen of All Saints Catholic Church and a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Survivors include his wife, Eloise, Michigan City; one son, Patrick (Sue) Cavanaugh, Lemont, Ill.; three daughters, Margaret (Bill) LaBruyre, Louisville, Ky., Jane (Marc) Shuger, Michigan City, and Martha (Howard) Simonin, Holland Patent, NY; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Paul (Jean) Cavanaugh, Storm Lake; and one sister-in-law, Dorothe Cavanaugh, Newell.

Preceding Mr. Cavanaugh in death were two brothers, Donald and Cecil; and one sister, Veronica Dell.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael J. Yadron officiating. Entombment was in the Greenwood Cemetery Mausoleum.
