Lyle Vreeland, 94, of Sioux Rapids, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.
Lyle Clyde Vreeland was born September 22, 1907, the son of Floyd M. and Edna M. (Gleason) Vreeland at Ocheyedan. Floyd lived there in the Spencer area the first nine years of his life. Then he lived with his maternal grandparents, Joel and Annie Gleason, until he was 14 years old.
He attended schools in Spencer and Sioux Rapids. During WWII, Lyle served in the United States Army from September 23, 1942, until his discharge on November 16, 1945. Lyle did farm work. He also worked for a bus company in Michigan as an inspector and shipper for car parts. In addition, he worked for the Jackson County, Michigan, road commission for 16 years and for Brights' Feed Store and Brights' Sanitation, retiring in September of 1972.
On August 12, 1970, Lyle married Velma Marie Bonar in Jackson, Minn. Lyle enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, and just visiting with people.
Preceding Lyle in death were his parents, and six brothers, Donald, Lloyd, Russell, Harold, Ray and Ernest Vreeland.
Survivors include his wife Velma Vreeland of Sioux Rapids; four stepchildren, Dale and his wife Mary Ball of Chino Hills, CA., Lill and her husband Rich Pelton, Montague, CA., Ed and his wife Jean Ball of Marbury, AL., and Tom and wife Jackie Ball of Eagle Grove. Also surviving are step-granchildren, step-great-grandchildren, two sisters, Opal White of Spring Arbor, MI., and Avis Crapo of Knoxville, TN., nine nieces and nephews, and 26 great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Lyle Vreeland were held Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the Sliefert Redig Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids with Pastor Emily Allen officiating.
Burial was in the Barnes Township Cemetery, Linn Grove, with Military Honors by the Graeber-Rowe American Legion Post #394 of Sioux Rapids.
