Edward R. Torkelson, of Keller, Texas, and Sioux Rapids, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2002, at his son's home in Keller, Texas, at the age of 89.

Edward Raymond (Eddie) Torkelson was born November 4, 1912, the son of Benjamin Julius and Martha Inger (Sigurdson) Torkelson on the family farm two miles east of Sioux Rapids. He attended school in Sioux Rapids until the tenth grade when the family moved to a farm near Sioux City, where he attended East High School.

He was united in marriage to Nina Mavis Hughes on January 6, 1938, at Popillion, Neb. To this union two children were born, Darlowe and Kimberly.

Eddie entered the U.S. Army on April 26, 1943, in Arlington, Calif. and was honorably discharged on February 22, 1946, at Fort MacArthur, Calif.

The couple moved back to Sioux Rapids where they owned and operated the Tork's Inn from 1949 until their retirement in 1971. He also sold National Motor Club memberships and worked at the Little Sioux Golf Course for a number of years.

Eddie was an active member of the community, serving eight years on the Sioux Rapids City Council, and he was a 50-year member of the Enterprise Masonic Lodge #332 A.F. and A.M. of Sioux Rapids.

Preceding Eddie in death were his parents; his wife, Mavis, on April 30, 2001; a grandson, Maximilian Perry; and four brothers, Christopher, Omer, June, and Harold; and one sister, Mildred "Babe" Green.

Survivors include his son and his wife, Darlowe and Sharon Torkelson of Keller, Texas, and his daughter, Kimberly Perry of Alt;a, two grandchildren, Courtney Torkelson of Dallas, Texas, and Aaron Torkelson of Keller, Texas; and one sister Elizabeth Neubacher of Berkley, Calif.; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Edward R. Torkelson will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, February 28, 2002, at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. The Sliefert Redig Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
