Dorothy Snyder Powell, 88, formerly of Storm Lake, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Billings, Mont., on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002. She was born May 23, 1913, in Waverly, Neb.

Dorothy moved to Billings in 1964 with her husband, the Reverend Luther Philip Powell. Luther was a minister at the First Presbyterian church in Billings until he retired. Over the years, Dorothy served various communities as a minister's wife while also raising five children. Luther's ministry moved them from Chicago to New Jersey, to Storm Lake and to Billings.

Along with participating in her husband's ministry, Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed being a homemaker. Her passions included sewing, cooking, flowers, entertaining, and in later years, helping raise her grandchildren.

Dorothy was a sincere and caring person with a smile that came from the heart. As her grandchildren, Luke and Jenny, say, "Grandma was a great person who had a wonderful life. She was an angel on loan."

Dorothy graduated from Waverly High School and attended Nebraska Wesleyan College and the University of Nebraska. She received her teaching certificate and taught school and was the librarian in several one-room schoolhouses.

Dorothy and Luther were married May 13, 1939, in her parent's home in Waverly, Neb.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Powell; her son, Douglas Powell; her parents, Lela and George Snyder; her brothers, Marv and Paul; and sisters, Fern and Edith.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Powell of Minnetonka, Minn., and Mary Ann Powell of Springfield, Ore.; her sons, Jim Powell of Billings, and Bob Powell of San Jose, Calif.; her grandchildren, Luke and Jenny Powell of Billings; her brothers, Wayne Snyder of Roca, Neb., Phil Snyder of Oregon City, Ore., and Larry Snyder of Monmouth, Ore.; and her sister, Marian Rennick of Lincoln, Neb.

An open house memorial was held yesterday at her home in Billings, Mont. Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to The Heifer Project, First Presbyterian Church, 2420 13th St., West Billings, Mont., 59102. The Dahl Funeral and Cremation Service is handling arrangements.
