Marilyn LaVanche Carlson Brueggert, a retired nurse and Iowa native, died on the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in her home in Baton Rouge, La. She was 77.

The daughter of Swedish immigrants Brent Victor Carlson and Ellen Sofia Swanson, she was born on Sept. 28, 1924, in Galva. Educated as a nurse in Omaha, Neb., she began a life of caring for others, especially the sick and the elderly.

She married Harold Floyd Brueggert in 1950, and they had three children, Vickie, Cheryl and Jayne. She worked until her retirement as a nurse in Alta where her devoted care for others is still remembered today. She moved to Baton Rouge with Harold in 1992.

She loved animals as well as people and took great joy in her pets. She was a devoted Christian and a lifelong Lutheran with strong ties to Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta.

She is survived by her brother, Donald Carlson, of Spencer; daughter Jayne Brueggert, of Baton Rouge; and daughter Vickie Jensen and son-in-law Leslie Jensen, of Baton Rouge.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold and daughter Cheryl.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta with Rev. Lilette Johnston officiating. Her ashes will be interred at Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery in Storm Lake.

Her Baton Rouge congregation, the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, 3555 Jones Creek Road, will conduct a memorial service for her today, Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen A. Springer officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.
