Berniece G. Crawford, 91, formerly of Alta, died in her Merced, California, home January 28, 2002.

Berniece was born in Alta, February 24, 1910, to the late Hans and Emma Hansen. She attended Alta High School where she graduated in 1927. Then after attending Buena Vista College, she began teaching school in Curlew, Iowa, and later in Plouer and Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

On February 14, 1943, Berniece married Elzie L. Crawford of Erick, OK. While serving in the Army, they lived in Germany, Korea, Japan, Laurel, Maryland, and San Francisco, CA.

They both shared a love for reading and a love for travel. Their journeys took them to the Far East, Russia, Africa, South America and Europe.

Berniece is survived by her sister Adeline Petersen, Alta; and her nephew Bruce Lynn Petersen and family members of Liste, Iowa, along with several cousins.

Preceding her in death were her parents Hans and Emma Hansen and her husband, Elzie L. Crawford, who died January 17, 1990.

Funeral services for Berniece Crawford were held at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Gustine, California on February 11, 2002.
