Steve Buchholz - May 21, 1948 - Feb. 14, 2002
Wednesday, February 20, 2002
Steven "Buck" Buchholz, 53, of Truesdale, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2002, at home in Truesdale at the age of 53 years, 8 months, and 7 days. In February of 2000, Steve was diagnosed with cancer. He continued to fight the disease until the very end.
Steven Charles "Buck" Buchholz was born May 21, 1948, the son of Walter and Leone (Gaes) Buchholz in Storm Lake. He attended and completed the eighth grade at Zion Lutheran Parochial School and then went on to attend Albert City-Truesdale High School, graduating in 1966.
Soon after graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was sent to Vietnam where he served 18 months. After he returned home he attended Buena Vista College and graduated with a degree in Business. He then became a salesman for the Morman Feed Company where he remained until 1992.
Steve then started driving school bus for the Albert City-Truesdale school district until he was unable to continue due to his health. He was also assistant baseball coach for AC-T from 1992 until he had to stop for health reasons. Steve served as mayor of Truesdale for two terms. He also liked to help do field work on a friend's farm. Steve received an award from the Governor of Iowa for all his volunteer work in 1998.
Steve was an avid sports fan; he lived and breathed sports. He coached little League in Truesdale for many years. He was on the sidelines of all the AC-T football games recording stats or sitting at the clock for all the home basketball games. He would drive the bus for the players to away games. He was one of the Iowa Hawkeyes biggest fans. He didn't care if the teams were playing football or basketball or if they were winning or losing, he watched, listened, and even attended some games.
Preceding Steve in death were his paternal and maternal grandparents, one brother, Stuart Buchholz, and infant sister, Shelly Buchholz, and an infant nephew, Joshua Black.
Survivors include his parents, Walter and Leone Buchholz, four brothers and one sister, Stan and his wife Kathy Buchholz, Brian Buchholz, Brad Buchholz, Phil and his wife Darcy Buchholz all of Truesdale; and Barrie and her husband Chuck Black of Council Bluffs, five nieces, four nephews, one great-nephew, one great-niece, and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Steve Buchholz were held Monday, February 18, 2002, at the Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Sliefert Redig Funeral Home, Albert City, was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial fund has been established.
