Agnes Margeline (Lund) Grundmeier, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died June 1, 2010, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake after having complications with Alzheimer’s.
Agnes was born February 10, 1931, in rural Buena Vista County, a daughter of Hans Peter Lund and Dagmar Othilia (Andersen) Lund.
She attended Providence Consolidated School in Sulphur Springs, Iowa. She played basketball all four years of high school; in 1946 she received a letter from the Iowa Girls' High School Basketball editor "Congratulations upon receiving statewide recognition in girls' basketball in Jack North's selections in the Sunday's Des Moines Register. Mr. North sent out ballots to all coaches so your selection is a distinct honor." Also from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, for being chosen to the ALL STATE team in 1946 and 1947. She was also a member of a sextet that went to the National Music Contest in St. Joseph, Missouri, and got First Rating for Ensembles. Agnes danced in a Danish Folk Dancing group that traveled northwest Iowa. She graduated from Sulphur Springs in 1948.
Agnes worked at Citizens 1st National Bank and Production Marketing Association (PMA) before she was married.
On September 11, 1955, Agnes was united in marriage to Melvin Grundmeier at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Together the couple farmed in Maple Valley & Hayes Townships until Mel retired and they moved to Storm Lake in 1987. Agnes worked part time for several years for the Farm Business Association, Gary Rosene’s Office and the ASCS Office. Starting in 1987, she worked full time at the ASCS office until she retired in 1994.
Agnes was always an active church member, most recently of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Married Meters, church choir, Card Club, Birthday Club, and the Hayes Grange. In addition, she attended Via de Cristo.
She enjoyed dancing, puzzles, playing cards, helping out in the fields and spending time with family and friends. Agnes enjoyed the many summers she and Mel pent at their cabin in Minnesota.
Keeping up with the activities and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren was her primary joy. Her family includes her husband, Melvin, of Storm Lake; three children: Gary Grundmeier and his wife Peg of Storm Lake; Lynn Snyder and her husband Rolen of Alta, IA; Dan Grundmeier and his wife Cyndi of St. Paul, MN. Eight grandchildren: Josh and Laura Grundmeier of Minneapolis, MN; Nick and Jessica Grundmeier of Omaha, NE; Eric Grundmeier of Storm Lake, IA; Jamie Snyder of Omaha, NE; Brianna Snyder and Danny Imel of Cedar City, UT; Ashly Schuette; DJ Schuette; and David Grundmeier all from St. Paul, MN. One great-grandson, Ethan Joel Grundmeier of Omaha, NE; and a great granddaughter expected in July.
Also surviving are two sisters, Ellen Rasmussen and Ruby (Leon) Haahr; one brother, Norman (JoAn) Lund; sisters-in-law, Arlene Grundmeier and Gladys (Don) Kestel and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Ronald; other family members include: Elwood & Goldie Lund; Arnold Rasmussen; Theresa (Rasmussen) Haburn; Ronald Haahr; Viola & Curt Dills; Harold Grundmeier; Art Grundmeier; and Erv & Mildred Grundmeier.
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. June 04, 2010, at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa
Visitation: 5-8:00 p.m. June 03, 2010, at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa
