Donald Shevel, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died May 13, 2010, at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Don was born May 1 1914, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Charlotte Diehl Shevel and John Shevel.

He attended Hayes Consolidated School and graduated in 1932. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Buena Vista College in 1936 with a B.S. in education(math/biology). Don taught at Meriden, Iowa, for one year and eight years at Gowrie, Iowa, where he met and, in 1940, married Alberta Claussen, an elementary teacher there.

In 1945 Don and Alberta returned to the family farm homesteaded by the Diehl family south of Storm Lake. His interest in education continued, and he served on school boards for Hayes Consolidated School, Storm Lake Public Schools, and Buena Vista County. He also served on the Buena Vista County Agricultural Soil Conservation Board and Farm Service Boards for many years. Don was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday school and served as an elder and clerk of the session.

After retiring from farming, he was actively involved with the Storm Lake Morning Kiwanis Club where he stirred batter for innumerable pancakes and popped corn for fairs and festivals. He loved horses, and horse shows and rode up until age 86. In 2003 he and Alberta moved to Otsego Place where he resided until March.

Don died on May 13, 2010, at Methodist Manor Nursing Home in Storm Lake at the age of 96. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy, and her husband, Jake Broderick of Reston, Virginia; and his children, Sally and her husband, Jim Lockwood, Rio Rico, Arizona; Linda Craig, Portland, Oregon; Susan and her husband, Richard Darby, Litchfield Park, Arizona; and Scott and his wife, Joanie Shevel, Storm Lake, and grandchildren Gwynn Lockwood, Berkeley, California; Dana Lockwood and her husband, Mark Sanders, Charlotte, North Carolina; and Katy Shevel, Waverly, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Alberta, who passed away in 2005, and by Alesa Christine, infant daughter of Scott and Joanie in 1988.

Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. June 08, 2010, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, Iowa
Interment: June 08, 2010, at Storm Lake Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa
