Alfred L. Swenson, age 85, of Storm Lake, formerly of Strawberry Point, died Monday, December 31, 2001, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a brief illness.

Alfred Leo Swenson was born March 18, 1916, at Napoleon, North Dakota, the son of Alfred and Mary (Nord) Swenson.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Napoleon. He graduated from Napoleon High School and attended Bismarck Business College.

On June 8, 1940, Alfred was united in marriage to Garnett Crain at St. Joseph, Mo. The couple moved to Strawberry Point and established a Western Auto Store. Alfred later owned the International Implement Dealership in Strawberry Point and then began farming. In 1961, Alfred and Garnett moved to Storm Lake where they owned and operated a Dairy Queen. They returned to farm in Strawberry Point in 1968.

Alfred and Garnett retired in 1978. They wintered in Arizona for 18 years until health forced them to remain in Iowa. They moved back to Storm Lake about six years ago.

Alfred was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point and later at Grace Lutheran Church, Storm Lake. He was a member of the Lions Club and served on numerous church and civic boards. He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds and played golf when he was able. He was an avid newspaper reader and enjoyed playing cards.

He kept abreast of farming by calling or visiting his son-in-law daily when field work was in progress.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Garnett, Storm Lake; a daughter Tania Gutz and her husband Dennis, Newell; two sons, Gregory and his wife Janet, Virginia Beach, Va., and Colonel Gary Swenson, Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren: Jennifer Gutz Peterson and her husband Brock, John Swenson and Chad Swenson; and a sister Lucille Swenson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers: Melvin and Glen.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 4, 2002, at Emanuel Church, Strawberry Point, with Reverends Steven Rye and Al Hock officiating.

Burial will be in Strawberry Point Cemetery.
