Dorothy Whitaker, 81, of Carroll, formerly of Greenville, died on December 31, 2001, at the CLC Carroll Manor, in Carroll.

Dorothy Catherine Daly was born on March 19, 1920, near Oto, at the home of her parents, George J. and Rose (Ainchem) Daly. She was the sixth of their eight children.

After completing her education in Woodbury County schools, Dorothy worked in Sioux City and in the Rembrandt area as a domestic.

On February 8, 1939, she married Sherill J. Whitaker in Aurelia. The couple farmed near Rembrandt until 1942 when they moved to a farm south of Greenville. In 1944 their daughter, Patricia, was born.

Dorothy enjoyed the duties of a farm wife, especially gardening and cooking. In addition, she enjoyed playing cards and entertaining friends and family.

Following Sherill's retirement from farming in 1972, Dorothy and Sherill continued living on their farm. Dorothy tended Sherill through a lengthy illness until his death in 1993 and remained on their farm until May of 2001 when she moved to the Orchard View retirement center in Carroll.

Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents, her husband and three brothers, Louis, George, and Stewart Daly.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Pat and Donley Granstra of Carroll; and one grandson, Ian Whitaker Granstra of Indianola. In addition, she is survived by one sister, Vivian Langston of Black Duck, Minn.; and three brothers, Donald and his wife Helen Daly of Mapleton, Jeffrey Daly of Skiatook, Okla., and Richard and his wife Jane Daly of Lompoc, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Helen Daly of Moville; and nieces and nephews other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Dorothy Whitaker will be Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Sliefert Redig Funeral Home in Storm Lake with the Reverend John H. Rozendaal officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Sliefert Redig Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
