Melvin E. "Butch" Selk, 60, of Peterson, died suddenly in Storm Lake on Friday, December 28, 2001, at the age of 60.

Melvin E. "Butch" Selk, the son of Elmer and Hesper Mae Libolt Selk, was born November 14, 1941, near Larrabee. He received his education in Linn Grove, and graduated from there in 1959. Following his graduation, he began to farm in the Linn Grove area.

On January 18, 1964, Butch married Jeannie Stief in Peterson, and following their marriage, they continued to farm until 1966. He then worked at Quality Equipment selling John Deere farm machinery before going to work at Rasmussen's in Storm Lake.

While living in Peterson, he was a member of the First Congregational Church, a past firemen, and a past member of the Lion's Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and loved the Minnesota Vikings, but the most enjoyable time was time he spent with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Selk; one sister, Joyce Westphal; and one granddaughter, Kayla.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Jeannie, of Peterson; one son, Terry Selk and Jolene of Peterson; two daughters, Deb and Steve Gransow of Storm Lake; Stephanie and Jon Bang of Peterson; eight grandchildren; Jason, Luke, Austin, Colton, Max, Cassidy, Mason and Eric; his mother, Hesper Mae Selk of Peterson; four step-grandchildren; Gary, Jennie, Jerry, and Jon Bang; two sisters and their husbands, Carole and Mahlon Phelps of Vinton; Jody and Paul Braunschweig of Alta; as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Mr. Selk were held on Monday, December 31, 2001, at the First Congregational Church, Peterson, with Reverend Charles Hall officiating.

Interment was in Oakland Cemetery, Peterson. The Warner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
