Rose Schlesselman, age 94, of Storm Lake, formerly of Aurora, died peacefully at her Storm Lake home on Saturday, January 5, 2002.
Rose, the daughter of Carl Johann and Frieda Bertha (Kuenholdt) Weissinger, was born on June 13, 1907, in Des Moines.
She received her elementary education at Longfellow School and graduated from East High School. She was baptized and was an active member in the First Evangelical Church. She did office work and took night classes to learn how to operate a comptometer, after which she was employed at Rollins Hosiery Mill for several years.
Rosena Christina Weissinger and Ivan Paul Schlesselman were united in marriage on June 12, 1931, at her home in Des Moines by Ivan's father, Reverend C.H. Schlesselman. To this union were born three children: Philip Carl, Roma Lou and Jane Ann.
In her early years, she supported the family by taking in laundry and doing ironing while Ivan was serving his country in Seattle during World War II. In later years she kept books for her husband's business, the Aurora Oil Company. Outside of her main interest, which was serving her Lord in and out of church, she loved music, gardening and canning, reading, and doing word jumbles.
After living in Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Clear Lake, Waterloo and Oelwein, the family moved to Aurora in 1954 where she lived until 1996. Due to failing health, she found it necessary to move to Storm Lake and live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Throughout her lifetime she gave of her love, her time, and her talents, first to her family and then to her community, always seeking to put others first. During her years in Aurora, she served the community in various ways. The United Methodist Church enjoyed her musical talents as organist, pianist and youth choir director for over 30 years. The church honored her in 1987 on her 80th birthday for her gift of music. In 1995 she was voted the citizen with the "biggest heart" and received the Citizen of the Year Award.
She is survived by a son Philip, of Harper's Ferry; two daughters, Roma Treat, and her husband, Jim, of Storm Lake, and Jane Tonn and her husband, Gene of Plantation, Fla.; one sister, Gretchen Tuttle, Rochester, Minn.; six grandchildren: Jerry A. Schlesselman, Dawn Schlesselman, Todd Treat, Traci Treat Wharton, Tim Tonn and Troy Tonn; nine great grandchildren: Jeffrey and Jerica Schlesselman, Genoa, Jade and Jenelle Martin, and Tucker, Molly, Tanner and Trevor Wharton, also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 11, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Aurora United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Oelwein.
