George E. Sundblad, 83, of Sioux Rapids, died Monday, January 7, 2002, at the St. Lukes' Lutheran Home in Spencer where he had been a resident since December 28, 2001.

George Edward Sundblad was born July 25, 1918, the youngest of seven children to Gustav and Techla Josephine (Anderson) Sundblad near Larrabee. The family later moved to a farm near Sioux Rapids where George received his high school education. He graduated from Sioux Rapids High School in 1936.

He was united in marriage to June Marie Bergling on December 16, 1939, at Boone. The couple farmed near Sioux Rapids until retiring in 1981 when they moved into Sioux Rapids.

Following his retirement, George enjoyed spending time in his workshop creating special wood projects for family and friends. Time spent with family was one of the highlights of George's life. His children and grandchildren cherish the example he set for them in the way he lived out his daily life. George was an active member of the Albert City Evangelical Free Church.

Preceding George in death were his parents, one brother, Karl and his wife Julia Sundblad, and sister-in-law, Dorothy Sundblad.

Survivors include his wife, June Sundblad of Sioux Rapids; one son, Larry and his wife Mary Sundblad of Sioux Rapids; one daughter Margene and her husband Larry Smith of Alcester, SD; six grandchildren, Steve and his wife Wanda Sundblad of Spencer, Greg and his wife Wendy Sundblad of Sioux Rapids, Lynn and her husband Wade Withers of Sioux Rapids, Jeff and his wife Jolene Smith of Sioux Falls, SD, Paul and his wife Jennie Smith of Orange City, and Mark Smith of Alcester, SD; and seven great-grandchildren, Andy, Nicholas, Justin, and Sydney Sundblad, Ty, Jacob, and Mullin Smith. Also surviving are three brothers, Walt and his wife June Sundblad of Albert City; Oscar and his wife Nellie Sundblad of Sioux Rapids, and Elmer Sundblad of Albert City; two sisters, Florence and her husband Vernal Anderson of Bull Shoals, AR, and Esther and her husband Clarence Larson of Laurens, and nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for George Sundblad will be Thursday, January 10, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Albert City Evangelical Free Church, Albert City, with the Pastor Steve Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids.
