Mary E. Connell, age 99, of Storm Lake, died Sunday, January 6, 2002, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Storm Lake, after a long illness.
Mary Ellen Kennedy was born February 25, 1902, in Washington Township, Buena Vista County, the daughter of Dan and Mary (Flanigan) Kennedy. She was a graduate of the St. Mary's High School class of 1920.
On February 11, 1931, she was united in marriage to Clarence C. Connell at St. Mary's Church in Storm Lake. Clarence died October 22, 1982. Mary was a life-long Buena Vista County resident and member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America, a member of the Legion of Mary and St. Mary's Guild. She was also a life-long supporter of St. Mary's Catholic School, and she loved cooking, baking and spending time with her family.
Her family includes her children: Helen Bosley and her husband Ernie, Storm Lake, Dan Connell and his wife Linda, Storm Lake, and Dorothy Hammer and her husband Jack, Springfield, Mo.; 12 grandchildren: Ken Bosley and his wife Johanna, Mike Bosley, Kathy Mummert and her husband Steve, Mary Larson and her husband Ed, Teresa Schwier and her husband Craig, Tom Bosley and his wife Jodi, Molly Crosby and her husband Doug, Amy Hilmes and her husband Steve, Dan Connell and his wife Kerri, Caroline Connell, Jack Hammer Jr. and his wife Mary Ellen and Michael Hammer.
Also surviving are 14 great grandchildren, a sister, Ann Swezey, Denver, Colo., and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant brother, three sisters and a great granddaughter Heidi Mummert.
A funeral mass was celebrated on Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake with the Reverends Robert Schimmer, Patrick O'Kane, Richard Remmes and Deacon LeRoy Rupp officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. A memorial fund for the Saint Mary's School Foundation has been established.
