Leo M. Coons, 84, of Sioux Rapids died Dec. 27, 2001, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

Leo Maxwell Coons was born April 8, 1917, the son of A.I. and Ruth (Elliott) Coons in Ireton. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Methodist faith. Leo attended school in Ireton. He served in the Army from 1944 through 1949 and was discharged as a sergeant.

On August 8, 1971, Leo married Eleanor Stuckenschneider at Elk Point, South Dakota. Leo worked for HyGrade for 25 years. He enjoyed watching baseball, playing cards, and spending time with his family and friends.

Preceding Leo in death were his parents, two brothers, Russell and Donald Coons, three sisters, Lois Guetschow, Millie Coons, and Gertrude Brandt, and his son-in-law, Donald Harvey.

Survivors include his wife Eleanor Coons of Sioux Rapids, one daughter, Marilyn Harvey of Alta, one son, Larry Coons of Gulf Shores, Al, two step-sons, Gary and his wife Colleen Stuckenschneider of Sioux Rapids and Greg and his wife Lisa Stuckenschneider of Storm Lake, one step-daughter, Joan and her husband Richard Spooner of Sioux Rapids, two grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren, three sisters, Blanche Swanson, Mickie Van Leevwen and Joyce Thompson all of Primghar, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Leo Coons will be 2 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2001, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids with Father John Cain officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake with military honors by the Amvets Post 66.
