Elmer A. Bright, 87, of Sioux Rapids, died Saturday, November 3, 2001, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.

Elmer Bright, Jr., was born February 1, 1914, the son of Elmer A. and Grace (Meyer) Bright, Sr., in Sioux Rapids. Elmer attended school in Sioux Rapids and graduated from high school in 1933. He enjoyed playing football and basketball in his younger years.

Elmer married Fern Gale Hollesen at the Methodist Parsonage at Sioux Rapids on July 2, 1939. To this union three children were born, Donald, Becky and Jon.

Starting out as a farm laborer, Elmer later farmed on his own. After moving to town he worked at Quaker Oats Elevator for several years and for Middendorff Well Co., for eight years. He operated a sanitation service and was the water and sewer superintendent in Sioux Rapids for many years before his retirement. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Sioux Rapids City Council for twelve years.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and grandsons. He greatly enjoyed sporting events especially those where family members participated. He was a kind, loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Preceding Elmer in death were his parents, three brothers, Alfred, William and Floyd, two sisters, Alice Bappe Grey and Helen Maxwell.

Survivors include his wife Fern Bright of Sioux Rapids, two sons, Don and his wife Shirley of Cherokee, and Jon and his wife Julie of Sioux Rapids, one daughter, Becky Roberts of Storm Lake. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Kenny Bright, Kathy Woodall and her husband Jerry, Karen Benson and her husband Chris, Clint Roberts and his wife Jessica, Nicole Lussman, Kirk Bright, and Kayla Bright, five great-grandchildren, Matthew and Maddison Woodall and Jessica and Emilee Benson and Ethan Roberts, one sister-in-law Arlene Bright of Sioux Rapids, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Elmer Bright be Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church in Sioux Rapids with Pastor Emily Allen officiating. Interment will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery, Sioux Rapids.

Casket bearers are Craig Middendorff, Jim Meister, Lee Romine, Rich Romine, Ben Hollesen and Rich Haldin. Honorary casket bearers are Kenny Bright, Clint Roberts Kirk Bright, Chris Benson, Jerry Woodall, Lonnie Meister, Eddy Hollesen, Dale Bappe, and Jack Maxwell.
