Joy Phyllis Mattson of Alta passed away on November 4, 2001, in Iowa City at the age of 72 years, 8 months, and 8 days.
Joy Baker, daughter of Lawrence and Clara (Manker) Baker was born in Canova, South Dakota, on February 26, 1929. She attended college at Morningside in Sioux City and taught country school for two years in Woodbury County.
On April 9, 1950, Joy was united in marriage to Leland Mattson at Rock Branch Methodist Church in Anton. The couple farmed in rural Alta until shortly before Leland's death, and she continued to live on the farm. This union was blessed with five sons and one daughter, Doug, Greg, Tim, David, Lance, and Kristine.
Joy was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Alta, serving as President, Secretary and Treasurer of the WELCA. She also served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Plainview Cemetery for numerous years. She enjoyed family, church, quilting, and gardening.
Joy was preceded in death by her husband Leland; her parents; and four brothers, Raymond, Reifel, Howard, and Gilbert.
She is survived by five sons, Doug and Sharon Mattson, Dike; Greg and Sandy Mattson, Alta; Tim and Terri Mattson, Eden Prairie, Minn.; David and Linda Mattson, Alta; Lance and Patty Mattson, Hartford, SD.; one daughter, Kristine and Larry Myers, Greenville; 19 grandchildren, Jim, Nathan, Travis, Christopher, Jacob, Jesse, Eric, Travis W., Benjamin, Allen, Joseph, Tara, Peter, Tyler, and Adam Mattson, Kim Doescher, Shannon Fulton, and Brandon and La Shon Myers; 6 great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret and Bud Gernhart, Kingsley; one brother, Eugene and Darlene Baker, Correctionville; and three sisters-in-law, Dolores Mattson, Grace Hoagland, and Amy Mulford.
Funeral Services for Joy Phyllis Mattson will be Friday, November 9, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Rembrandt with Pastor Durwood Clauson officiating.
Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery, Alta. Visitation will be Thursday, November 8, 2001, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Barker Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
