Verlyn Dwayne Peterson, 70, formerly of Alta, passed away at Kaiser Hospital, Fresno, California on October 30, 2001.
Verlyn was born in Alta on December 10, 1930, to Joe B. Peterson and Leonora Peterson (Wahlstrom).
Verlyn grew up in the town of Alta, attending grammar and high school were he lettered in varsity football every year. At 18 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving two tours of duty, one in Japan. He was honorably discharged after nine years of service. Trained as a Navy Corpsman and Medical Technologist, Verlyn worked as a hospital clinical laboratory Technologist in the states of Colorado, South Carolina, Georgia, and Iowa. In 1976 he was employed at Valley Children's Hospital until his retirement in 1995. He also trained and served as a Deputy Sheriff and Deputy Coroner in Pueblo, Co. and was a Real Estate Broker for several years.
Aside from his career, Verlyn had many enduring interests and studied a variety of subjects including the Sciences, Religions and Philosophies of men and the universe.
Organizations and memberships include: Norden Lodge Vasa Order of America (Swedish Club), Masonic Pomegranate Lodge 32nd Degree, Mason Scottish Rite, Shriner (Tehran Temple Legion of Honor), and in retirement, Fresno Chapter High 12.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Violet, and brother-in-law, Leonard Murphy, and sons, Dwayne and Christopher Peterson, and great niece, Denise Johnson.
Verlyn is survived by his daughter, Alberta Ruth Hughes (Lee), and his son Marvin Peterson, (Priscilla), of Pueblo, Co.; his grandson Larry Hand, (Debbie), and great grandchildren Taylor, Lindsey and Paige Hand, of Colorado Springs, Co. He is also survived by his nieces Myrna Johnson, Marlene Fork (Al), and Marilyn Quinn, (Mac), and his nephew Myron Murphy, (Lori), as well as many great nieces and nephews; also special friend Susan Kraus and her sons, Eddie, Jerod, and Sean Kraus.
Verlyn will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Funeral Services for Verlyn Peterson will be held Saturday, November 10, 2001, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Alta, with Pastor Lilette E. Johnston officiating.
Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery, Alta, with Military rites by VFW Post # 6172 of Alta. The Barker Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
