Dan was born January 29, 1914, in New York City, to Soren and Elizabeth (Jensen) Christensen when Soren arrived from Denmark.

His family bought a farm in Tyler, Minnesota, but in the 1920s Dan accompanied his father and brothers to Iowa to build bridges and culverts. This was the origin of Christensen Brothers Construction in the 1930's. Dan and his three remaining brothers ran the company. They built their first bridge east of IBP in Storm Lake. Dan's main job was estimating, taking the risk out of a job with his pencil. He remained active in the business until his retirement in 1983.

Dan's construction experience came in handy when he joined the Seabees in World War II. He spent the war building airports and landing docks on the islands in the Pacific.

After the war, he was married to Florence Robinson who passed away in 1975. On December 27, 1976, he was married to Betsy Myers at Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

His favorite recreation was golf, and he was part of the group that organized Lake Creek Country Club.

Having lived in Cherokee since 1976, he made his home at 409 Centennial Drive. Previously, he had spent 30 years residing in Storm Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers.

He is survived by his wife Betsy and three sons: Don Christensen and his wife Rachel of Cuernauaca, Mexico; Clark Christensen of Arnolds Park; John Christensen of Storm Lake; three grandchildren Daniel, Kate and Megan Christensen; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 10, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Reverend Robert Grupp will officiate. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery at Storm Lake.

There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.
