Irene Bengston - July 23, 1924 - Oct. 1, 2001

Irene Vera Bengtson, 77, passed away on October 1, 2001, at Sunset Knoll Retirement Home, Aurelia.

Irene was born to the union of Arnold and Emma (Christopherson) Hammer, on July 23, 1924, in Sioux City. She attended county schools in Woodbury County.

She was married on September 22, 1944, to Wesley Norman Bengtson.

Irene was Baptized in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Alta. The couple farmed and raised their family until Irene's health problems necessitated moving to a nursing home in 1995. Her family and friends will remember her as a hard working and loving mother.

Survivors include her son, Loren and Betty of Vinita, Okla., her daughter, Barbara and Charles Patrick of Council Bluffs, her son, Tracy and Donna of Alta, Eight grandchildren; one sister, Eldora Bento of Des Moines, one brother; Norman and Jenny Hammer of O'Neil, Nebraska; three sisters-in-law, Bonnie Hammer of Battle Creek, Margarie Hammer of Storm Lake, and Joyce and Stanley Peterson of Alta, and many other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death was her parents, her husband, Wesley; one sister of Alta Reese of Battle Creek; and two brothers, Harold of Battle Creek, and Arnold Jr., of Storm Lake.

Services for Irene will be held Thursday, October 4, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the Savior's Lutheran Church, Rembrandt, with Pastor Durwood Clauson officiating.

Visitation was Wednesday October 3, 2001, from 2-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Plainview Cemetery, Alta.
