Monday, October 8, 2001
Harriet (Wilson) Greenup died in the early morning of September 30, 2001, at her home in Soap Lake, Washington.
She was proud to be a part of a very large and close-knit family which was one of the early pioneer families of Storm Lake. Her grandfather, William North was a member of one of the early fire departments.
Harriet Esther was born to William & Gladys (North) Wilson on August 18, 1918, at the family home in Storm Lake. Harriett was proud of being a lifetime member of the Baptist Church. She was baptized at the First Baptist Church, Storm Lake, and was an active member until she moved to the west coast. She belonged to First Baptist Church, Soap Lake, Washington, for over 40 years. She attended Storm Lake schools and graduated with the class of 1938. On October 9, 1942, she married Ralph Greenup at Fort Roberts, California. She lived in Storm Lake while Ralph served in Europe during World War II. They welcomed a daughter Darlene Lois in 1951. In 1953 they moved to the family ranch near Soap Lake.
Ralph was a much-loved bus driver for the Soap Lake school district but died of a heart attack in 1969. After his death, Harriett worked at the Soap Lake Hospital & Nursing home and at Jan's house of Ceramics.
She was a very special and loving Aunt not only to her 16 nieces and nephews but also to her 36 great nieces and nephews and a number of great-great nieces. She attempted to make a porcelain doll or ceramic scene for each of her nieces or great nieces. She had been active in the Soap Lake Rebekah Lodge since 1955, holding all the offices at some time during the years. She faithfully helped at the card parties held for the senior citizens of the area. The Lodge people also manned a rest stop on I-90 and gave out coffee and cookies to weary travelers driving through Washington. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Soap Lake.
Harriett was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; her parents Will & Gladys Wilson; her sister & brother-in-law Bessye and Lee Edwards; her brother and sister in law, Stanley & Jennie Wilson; her brother Leo Wilson; a nephew Larry Farmer; a great nephew Kim Rimmer; and a great niece Jeniffer Jo Boyle.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Gerald Holman, of Ephrata, Washington; grandsons William Fread and Alex Holman, of Ephrata; sister, Lois (Dale) Farmer, of Dover, Arkansas; sister-in-law, Vera (Leo) Wilson, of Milliken, Co.; aunt, Dorothy (Art) Wilson, of Schaller; special cousins, Della (Walter) Hobermann, of Alta; Ethelyn, of Emmetsburg; Mary (North) Sorgea, of Yuba City, California; Dewitt (Ruby) Steig, Storm Lake; special nephew Jack Edwards, Aurora, California; local nieces Sandra (Francis) Heid, of Cherokee; Pam (Bob) Sampers, of Alta; Marcia (Larry) Heinsohn, of Storm Lake; Phyllis (Neal) Sennert, of Rembrandt; and a host of other relatives and friends.
