John Huldeen - Aug. 29, 1926 - Oct. 11, 2001

John S. Huldeen, 75, of Odebolt, died of congestive heart failure on Thursday, October, 11, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Mr. Huldeen was born August 29, 1926, in Odebolt, to Alvin and Florence (Brynteson) Huldeen. He was baptized at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Odebolt.

A graduate of the Odebolt High School, Mr. Huldeen also attended Iowa State University Winter Quarter Programs.

On December 12, 1948, John married Lucy Wayne in Odebolt. They lived near Odebolt where they farmed most of their adult lives, with the exception of three years when they farmed near Marcus. He was formerly a Real Estate Broker with the Patton Agency in Storm Lake and an Archer Petroleum County Manager.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, serving on various church offices and committees. He was a former Prospect Hill Presbytery Communication Chairman. He served on the Sac County Farm Bureau, the Iowa Corn Growers Association, the Iowa Soybean Association, and the Rural Iowa Soybean Association. He supported Iowans for Tax Relief and was a former Vice President of the Storm Lake Realtors and a former President of the Storm Lake Lions.

He served as the Boys State Superintendent of Public Instruction. He held local and state FFA Offices as well as county 4-H offices and the FFA American Farmer Degree. He was President of the Sac County Board of Education and served on the Sac County Conference Board, the Sac County Planning and Zoning Commission, the Sac County Magistrate Appointing Commission, the Odebolt-Arthur and Sac County Fair Boards, and he was Director and Vice President of Sac County Pork Producers Association.

An active Republican, John served as Sac County Republican Chairman. He was a 5th District Member of the State Central Committee and Budget Sub-Committee Chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa, and he served as an at-large delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1988. He also served on many political campaigns and as a staff person for the Lightfoot for Governor and Alexander for President campaigns.

John Huldeen, having played trombone in high school, enjoyed music and singing throughout his life. He especially delighted in the music made by his children and grandchildren. His hobbies included Republican Party Politics, travel, and his lawn and garden.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy of Odebolt; his children, Barb Votrobeck and husband, Rick, of Arthur; Brent Huldeen and wife, Beverly, of Sioux City; and Gwen Ecklund and husband, Arlan, of Denison; six granchildren, Sarah Strauss and husband, Sean, of Indianapolis, Ind.; Nick Votrobeck of Bloomington, Minn.; Phil Huldeen of Indianapolis, Ind.; Collin Votrobeck of Arthur; Elizabeth Ecklund of Denison; and Ruth Huldeen of Sioux City; a sister, Carolyn Dill, and husband, Duane, of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Jerry Huldeen, and wife, Mabel, of Sioux City; and seven neices and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a step-mother, Gladys Louden Huldeen, and son, J. Bruce Huldeen.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 15, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. Music included a congregational singing of "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" and the grandchildren, accompanied by Kala Zanoni, singing "My God and I" accompanied by organist Carol Raasch.

Casket bearers were his nephews and nieces: Kirk Huldeen, Amy Dull Filipezak, Kala Huldeen Zanoni, Jay Huldeen, Duane Dull, Jr., Jeff Dull and Eric Dull.

Honorary bearers were Richie Davis, Loren Hechtner, Darold Jacobson, Clarence Etler, Wally Carstensen, Bob Thayer, Don Einspahr, Clayton Larson, and Congressman Tom Latham.

Interment was in the Odebolt Cemetery. Farber & Otteman Funeral Home handled all funeral arrangements.

Memorials may be made in John's name to the First Presbyterian Church Landscaping Project.
