Mary Dorothy Hankel, 80, formerly of Alta, died at the Sunset Knoll Retirement Home, Aurelia, on October 10, 2001.

Mary Hankel was born May 26, 1921, in Galva. She was baptized April 27, 1924, by the sainted Rev. George Kock at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva. When she was seven years old, she went to live with Chris and Etta Caboth for one year. She was then raised by Albert and Meta Moschell who later adopted her. She was confirmed March 31, 1935, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover.

She attended St. John's Parochial School in Hanover. She was taught by teacher, Jacob Schmidt; she graduated from Alta High School on May 21, 1940.

Mary was married to Louis Hankel on August 10, 1941, in Hanover.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Ronald and Linda Hankel of Yakima, Washington; one daughter, Debra and Daryl Ramquist of Offutt Air Force Base; five grandchildren, Chris and Stacey Hankel, Shannon Hankel, Carrie Hankel, Alisha Mason, and Joshua Ramquist; three great grandchildren, Madison Hankel, Olivia Hankel, and Hailie Hankel; one sister, Arlene Rohlk of Storm Lake; one aunt, Etta Caboth; one uncle, Willie Hartmann; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her adoptive parents, Albert and Mattie Moschell; two brothers, Frank and Richard Hartmann; and one sister, Anne Partridge.

Visitation will be at the Barker Funeral Home in Alta on Sunday, October 14, from 2-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hankel will be Monday, October 15, 2001, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Alta, with Pastor Kevin Huss officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park, Storm Lake.
