Duane Maher, 79, of Sidney, Iowa, formerly of Storm Lake, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa, following an extended illness.

Duane was born September 28, 1922, in Imogene, Iowa, to Edmund Clement Maher and Edna Julia (Skahill) Maher. Duane was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamburg and the Eagles Club in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Duane, along with his brother, owned and operated Maher Brothers Trucking Company. He, later, drove for Thermogas and Wynn Transport among others for many years. After retiring, Duane moved back to Sidney and worked as an associate with the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney and Tabor for 15 years. He also helped occasionally at Marshall & Sons Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Maurice and Richard Maher; brothers-in-law, Joe Hebenstreit, Robert and James Myers; and a granddaughter, Holly Maher. He is survived by three daughters, Sandra Schmitt and husband George of Wall Lake, Connie Mack and husband Scott of Lake View, and Sherri Fitzpatrick and husband Don of Storm Lake; son, Dennis Maher and wife Mary of Storm Lake; 12 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; three sister, Leona Travis of Sidney; Grace (Hebenstreit) McQuire and husband Dan of Omaha, Nebraska; and Doris McDonald and husband Packy of Wichita, Kansas; two brothers, Marvin Maher and wife Kathleen of Omaha, and Marty Maher and wife Carolyn of Sidney; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Maher of Omaha, and Helen Maher of Sidney; numerous nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah with Fr. Don Bruck officiating. A visitation was yesterday at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney. Graveside services will be 4 p.m., Saturday, at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. A memorial fund has been established. The Crawford-Marshal Funeral Chapel in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
