Thomas Spiess - Sept. 20, 1911 - Oct. 21, 2001

Thomas Russel Spiess, 90, formerly of Sioux Rapids, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2001, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Thomas Spiess, son of Henry W. and Elizabeth (Patterson) Spiess, was born September 20, 1911, at Knoke. When Russel was young he lived with his family in the Jolly and Webb areas. He received his grade school education at Lincoln-Lee country school and then graduated from Webb High School with the class of 1930.

He married Elizabeth Frances Stone on December 25, 1931, at Spencer. To this union two sons, Virgil and Larry, and two daughters Wanda and Virginia, were born.

They started farming in 1934 northwest of Webb. They then moved to Sioux Rapids in 1946 and farmed there until Russel retired in 1872. Then, they moved into town. He also worked as A.C.S. corn scaler and County Spot Checker. After he retired they started traveling around in their travel trailer. They spent the winters in Florida, Georgia, Texas, California and Arizona. In 1980 they purchased a mobile home in Apache Junction, Arizona, and spent winters in Arizona and summers in Iowa. His hobbies were camping, fishing and woodworking crafts and visiting with anyone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister Dorothy Fredin, a son-in-law Joe Marino, a granddaughter Baby Hollenbeck, and a great granddaughter, Courtney Ann Hollenbeck.

His survivors include his sons, Virgil and his wife Dorothy Spiess, Spencer and Larry and his wife Darlene Spiess, Alta; daughters, Wanda and her husband Wayne Hollenbeck, White, Georgia, and Virginia Marino and friend Jim Haddad, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; a brother Kenneth and wife, Lillian Spiess, Spencer; brother-in-law Vince Fredin, Sioux Rapids; grandchildren Randy and wife Kelly Spiess, Steve Spiess and wife Susan, Peggy and husband Ken Schmidt, Julie and husband Kevin Hammer, Kimberly and husband Eric Huskey, Deborah Hollenbeck, Craig Hollenbeck and wife Carol Ann, Neal Hollenbeck and wife Cindy, Michael Marino and wife Brandi, Joey Marino, Sherry and husband Matthew Kacmarynski, and Greg Spiess. He is also survived by twenty great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Thomas Spiess were October 24, 2001, at First United Church, Sioux Rapids, with Pastor Emily Allen officiating.

Interment was in Poland Township Cemetery, Marathon. Funeral arrange-ments were by Sliefert Funeral Home.
