Ruth M. Saunders, 83, Topeka, died Sunday, September 2, 2001, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka Kan.

She was born Ruth White in Manilla, on May 1, 1918, attended two years of college and was a first grade teacher in Knoxville until she married George A. Saunders and became a homemaker. She returned to teaching in Harlan and taught for 12 more years in that community.

The couple lived in San Francisco, Calif., Sante Fe, N.M., Manilla, Harlan, Storm Lake, and Brownsville, Texas, before settling in Topeka in 1998 where they were near their daughter.

Ruth volunteered for numerous activities that ranged from being an aircraft spotter during WWII to working at I Care in Topeka. She was known for her entertaining of friends and for her caring for friends and family. Never without a needlework project, she donated much of her handiwork to children born in the hospitals where she volunteered her time. She loved music, sang in choirs, and played the piano for most of her life.

Ruth is survived by her husband, George, Topeka, a daughter, Lois Dixon, Topeka, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2001, at the Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, Topeka, Kan. A Service in Manilla will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606-2800.
