Dr. Lowell Henry "Doc" Roberts, 65, died September 10, 2001, of heart failure suffered while hiking in the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, about 60 miles from his home in Yakima, Washington.
Lowell was born on February 14, 1936, in Pomeroy, the oldest child of Lowell Haffele and Myrtle A. Roberts. He grew up on a farm near Albert City with his parents, sister Caroline, and brother John. When Lowell was nine, his father passed away, and Lowell worked hard to help his mother support the family. Lowell spent many of his teenage years farming the land with Dad's brothers, Homer and George Roberts, and George's sons, Jim and Tom Roberts. He graduated from Albert City High School in 1953 and attended Iowa State University, where he met the love of his life, Kay Eloise Steiner, whom he married on September 8, 1957. While still students, Lowell and Kay had two children, Elizabeth and Richard. Lowell received his degree in veterinary medicine in 1960 and moved to Corning where he and Kay had their third child, Christopher. "Doc" practiced large animal veterinary medicine in Corning until 1984 and also served on the Corning Community School Board for much of the 1970s. In 1984, Lowell decided to change careers and he began training for meat inspection with the USDA. In 1986, after 50 years of living in Iowa, Lowell and Kay moved to Yakima, Washington, where Lowell had accepted a position as USDA Inspector-in-Charge at Washington Beef, Inc. He retired from this position in May of 2001. Although he enjoyed living in Washington, Lowell always considered himself an Iowa farm boy.
Lowell loved growing up in Albert City and frequently visited his mother and his cousins Jim and Tom Roberts. He was an intelligent man who inherited a great love for the English language from is mother, Myrtle, who was an English teacher. He derived great pride and satisfaction from the fact that all three of his children earned doctoral degrees and work actively in medical research.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Kay, of Yakima; his sister, Caroline Meyer, of Rio Verde, Ariz.; his brother, Dr. John Roberts of Sioux City; his children and their families: Elizabeth Roberts, her husband Steve Nelson, and their twin daughters Anna and Katherine, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Richard Roberts, his wife Lisa, and their children Ira, Joshua, and Rebecca, of St. Louis, Mo.; and Christopher Roberts, his wife Laura Streichert, and their sons, Nicholas and Daniel, of Seattle, Wash.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2001, at 1:00 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in remembrance of Lowell to Our Savior's Lutheran Church or the Albert City Library.
