JoAnn Boettcher - July 15, 1934 - Jan. 25, 2008

JoAnn Sophie Opal (Hinkeldey) Boettcher, 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa, finished her earthly work and joined the heavenly choir on January 25, 2008. She died at home with her family by her side. She had fought a courageous battle with breast cancer 17 years ago which remained in remission. She developed another, very aggressive and relatively rare cancer diagnosed only 3 weeks before she passed from our presence.

JoAnn, named after her grandparents, John and Anna (Otto) Fahr, was born on July 15, 1934, on the farm in Maple Valley Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa. Her parents were Edward and Leone (Fahr) Hinkeldey. She was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran faith and confirmed that faith in 1948 at St. John Lutheran Church, Hanover, IA. She received her primary education at St. John Parochial School at Hanover. She attended Alta High School for three years and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1952. She was an efficient secretary to the Cherokee High School principal after her graduation. She then became the deputy clerk for Cherokee County until 1956.

On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1956, JoAnn was united in holy matrimony to Lloyd Boettcher of rural Storm Lake. The couple embarked on forty years of farming, the first 10 years north of Alta and then 30 years in Providence township southeast of Storm Lake. In 1996, they retired and fulfilled JoAnn’s dream of living by the lake in Storm Lake. The couple celebrated 50 blessed years of married life in 2006. JoAnn was a doting mother to their four children: Kevin Lloyd, Iris Fay, Ione Renae, and Kayla JoAnn.

She was a dedicated, tireless partner in the farm operation; Lloyd always referred to her as the “management.” Throughout her life, she was an active member of several church communities, the last 42 years at Grace Lutheran Church. She served at various times as Sunday School and Catechism teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Altar Guild, Ladies’ Aid and Circles, and she was a lifetime member of the choir.

JoAnn lived her earthly life in service to her community. She was actively involved with the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Auxiliary for a time, and she also offered care and comfort to other recovering cancer patients through Reach for Recovery. In recent years she enjoyed helping with lunch at Concordia Lutheran School. She thoroughly enjoyed her years as a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club and delighted in playing cards with several different groups of friends. She was also a talented seamstress and scrapbooker; she always had several projects in progress for her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a gracious hostess and welcoming friend; a woman of strength, diligence and great heart.

Left to cherish JoAnn’s memory are her husband, Lloyd; son Kevin and wife Kristi of Paoli, PA; daughter Iris of Grand Rapids, MI; daughter Ione and husband Gary Butler of Burnsville, MN; daughter Kayla and husband Matthew Turner of Sitka, AK; five grandchildren: Hannah and Emma Boettcher of Paoli, PA; and Sophia, Kristina, and Jonathan Butler of Burnsville, MN; nephew Barry Hinkeldey and family of Wauconda, IL, and countless friends and relatives.

In heaven she has joined her parents and her brother, Roger Hinkeldey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on WEDNESDAY, January 30, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake followed by graveside services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Concordia Lutheran School in Storm Lake.
