Harold Sliefert - Dec. 21, 1933 - Mar. 24, 2001

Harold Sliefert, 67, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2001, at his home in Storm Lake.

Harold Gene, the son of Arthur E. and Dollie E. (Hemm) Sliefert, was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Storm Lake. As a young man he lived with his family in the Storm Lake area and received his education at the Storm Lake Schools.

He joined the United States Navy on Oct. 24, 1952, and served on the U.S.S. James E. Kues with tours in Hawaii, Japan, Korea, China, Formosa and Siam. He received the rank of Gunner Mate-first class and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal two times. He received an honorable discharge on Oct. 17, 1956.

On Aug. 28, 1955, he married Vivian Alma Davis at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. To this union four daughters were born.

Mr. Sliefert worked at the Goodyear Tire Shop, Culligan Water Treatment and Wunder Tire Shop before serving the City of Storm Lake as Water Superintendent for 36 years.

He was president of the American Water Works Association in 1975 and also a life member. In 1977 he received the Fuller Award, the highest award possible in the water industry.

Mr. Sliefert's hobbies included racing stock cars from 1962 until 1979. He was presently serving as committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 104. He enjoyed boating and watching his grandchildren in their activities and achievements. He especially liked to travel and work on mechanical things in the garage. He also taught his grandsons his automotive techniques.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Junior and one sister Betty.

Mr. Sliefert is survived by his wife Vivian of Storm Lake; four daughters and their husbands: Rhonda and Timothy Staton of Alta, Valerie and Randy Hoffman of Ankeny, Julie and Charlie Bade of Denver, Colo., and Trina and Michael Staton of Rockwell City; two brothers and their wives: Donald and Dianne Sliefert of Alta and James and Sharon Sliefert of Storm Lake; three sisters and their spouses: Patty and Albert Herpst of Storm Lake; Shirley and Peter Despotovich of Omaha, Neb., and Mary and Art Hubbell, also of Omaha, Neb., and nine grandchildren. Other survivors include Merlin and Phyllis Davis, Everett and Phyllis Lenhart, Ruth Davis, Leonard and Margaret Brummer, along with a host of numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Sliefert will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, March 27, 2001, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Rev. Todd Schlitter officiating.

Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Sliefert Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers are Alan Lenhart, Brian Lenhart, Leland Staton, Andrew Staton, Jeremy Hoffman, Jason Bade and Zachary Staton.
