Ron Johnson - Feb. 10, 1939 - Jan. 31, 2001

Ronald "Ron" Johnson, 61, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his home after a courageous battler with cancer. His positive attitude, strength, and courage always pulled him through his four and half year struggle with the disease.

Ronald Lee, the son of Kenneth and Frances (Christiansen) Johnson was born Feb. 10, 1939, at home in Linn Grove. He was baptized and later confirmed in 1953 at Elk Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alta.

He grew up in the Alta area where he received his education and graduated from Highview High School with the Class of 1956. Following graduation, he worked for several farmers before joining Cargill in Rembrandt in 1958.

On March 30, 1960, he married Mary Herrig at Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. The couple lived on acreages in Sioux Rapids and Linn Grove before Mr. Johnson accepted a management position for Cargill in Bingham Lake, Minn., in March of 1965. Throughout his career, he loved his work and customers.

In 1972, the couple purchased the Bill and Helen Fuller farm in Lakeside Township of Cottonwood County. They continued to farm after his retirement in 1996 after 38 years of working for Cargill. In later years, he received enjoyment from running his antique tractors.

He was active with the Bingham Lake Fire Department, was an officer of Southwest Managers Association, the Mountain Lake Golf Club and had been a member of Lutheran Church of Our Savior since moving to the area. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, traveling and spending time with his four granddaughters.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his father Kenneth; one brother Kurt Johnson; his father-in-law Henry Herrig and one brother-in-law Richard Herrig.

He is survived by his wife Mary; two daughters and their spouses: Lynn and Larry Brandt of Mountain Lake, Minn., and Kim and Paul Adamson of Savage, Minn.; four granddaughters; his mother Frances Johnson of Spencer; one brother Steve Johnson of Olivia. Minn.; two sisters: Kaye and Butch Johnson of Monmouth, Ill., and Gail and David Nichols of Eden Prairie, Minn.; his mother-in-law Sadie Herrig of Spencer; one sister-in-law Margaret Jaeckel of Council Bluffs; one brother-in-law Henry and Teri Herrig of LeMars; nieces, nephews, special family members Helen Fuller of Windom, Minn. and Dick Jaeckel of Omaha, Neb.

Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were held Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom, Minn. Pastor Paul Woebbeking officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service.

Casketbearers were Dan Benz, Steve Borer, Steve Johnson, Doug Kremmin, Ron Peters and Chris Thurk. Honorary casketbearers were the Cargill managers and their wives, all former employees and customers. The Anderson Schmidt Funeral Home of Windom was in charge of the arrangements.
