Helen Glimpse - Dec. 17, 1903 - Jan. 21, 2001

Tuesday, February 13, 2001

Helen Cooper Glimpse, 97, a descendent of Hayes Township pioneer Samuel A. Haines, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Asbury Methodist Home in Gaithersburg, Md.

Helen Edosia Cooper was born Dec. 17, 1903, in Storm Lake, the daughter of Roy L. and Florence (Haines) Cooper. Her twin sister, Eleanor Cooper, lived in San Diego, Calif. and died several years ago.

The Haines family history in Buena Vista County dates back to 1863 when Samuel A. Haines of New Hampshire traveled to Storm Lake on a hunting trip. He liked the land around the lake so much that he purchased 640 acres in Hayes Township, Section 17, that same year for $8.00 an acre. He returned in 1864 to establish permanent residence. Portions of the original land purchase remained in the Haines family for six generations.

Mrs. Glimpse was a member of the Methodist Church in Gaithersburg and had resided at the Asbury Methodist Home for several years.

She is survived by one son and his wife Brigadier General H.R. Johnson, USAF (Ret.) and Marie B. Johnson of Potomac, Md.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Private family committal services were held Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at the Storm Lake Cemetery. Rev. Kenneth Bell of Storm Lake United Methodist Church officiated. The Fratzke Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
