Obituary dated July 1989:

Funeral services for Gayla Lindsey, 42, of Sioux Rapids, were held Friday morning, July 14, at 10:30 A.M. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids with Reverend Richard Jensen officiating. Mrs. Roger Mickelson was the organist. Mrs. Wendell Harald was the soloist and sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Take My Hand Precious Lord." Pallbearers were: Hardie "Butch" Ball, Jr., Paul Clapp, Terry Cuthbert, Richard Mosbo, Clint Sachau and Victor Weisbrod. Honorary bearers were: Reba Adams, Beverly Bovee, Ruby Cuthbert, Jean Ferguson, Sylvia Matthews, Lola Moe, Peggy Mosbo and Craig Sachau. Burial was in Lone Tree Cemetery at Sioux Rapids with the Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids in charge of the arrangements.

Gayla Rae Gottschall Lindsey, daughter of Ward and Irene Blount Gottschall, was born August 7, 1946, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. She was baptized as an infant in the First Congregational Church in Sioux Rapids and was later confirmed and became a member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Webb, Iowa. She attended school at Cornell from kindergarten to fourth grade, moving to Webb during her fourth grade year. She was active in cheerleading, basketball, the school newspaper and the Quill and Scroll. She was F.F.A. Sweetheart her junior year. She Graduated from South Clay High School in 1964. She completed one year at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and later attended Black Hills State College at Spearfish, South Dakota.

On August 21, 1965, she was united in marriage to Norman C. Lindsey of Laurens at the Congregational Church in Sioux Rapids. Two daughters were born to them: Tracie Sue and Tonya Mae. They lived on farms near Laurens and Webb until their divorce in 1972. In March of 1973, Gayla, Tracie and Tonya moved to Sturgis, South Dakota, were they resided until 1987 when Gayla and Tonya moved to Sioux Rapids. While in Sturgis, Gayla worked at KBHB Radio Station and as a secretary in the Sturgis High School.

Gayla first became ill in 1980, and after her brave bout with cancer, she passed away on Tuesday morning, July 11, 1989, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids at the age of 42 years, 11 months and 4 days. She is survived by her parents, Ward and Irene Gottschall of Sioux Rapids; her two daughters, Tracie (Mrs. Dean Baldwin) of Sturgis, South Dakota, and Tonya Lindsey of Dakota City, Iowa; three grandsons, Christopher and Shawn Baldwin of Sturgis and Nathan Paul Kinnetz of Dakota City; one sister, Joanne (Mrs. Curt Sachau) of Charter Oak, Iowa; two nephews, Craig Sachau of Ft. Lewis, Washington, Clint Sachau of Charter Oak; one niece, Christina Sachau of Council Bluffs and a host of other relatives and friends. She will be remembered for her pleasant personality, her sense of humor and her love of people. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
