Ward Eugene Gottschall was born March 6, 1915 at Lindsey, Nebraska, to Ernest and Martha Gottschall. He attended school there until the family moved to Columbus. He was an auto mechanic in Omaha before coming to Sioux Rapids in 1938.
Ward enlisted in the Army in 1941 and spent 19 months in Europe until World War II ended in 1945, when he was in Frankfort, Germany, with the 99th Infantry. While stationed in Pomona, California, he was united in marriage to Irene Blount in 1942. To this union were born two daughters, Joanne and Gayla. After the war they farmed near Sioux Rapids and Webb. He also did custom corn shelling. He was active in Northwest Trail Riders, planning and participating in horse shows. He was an avid fisherman, loved square dancing and wintering in Corpus Christi, Texas, after retiring from farming in 1987. He joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. His family was his pride and joy.
Ward died on Thursday, July 2, 1998, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Gayla Lindsey, brothers, Harrison and Stanley and sister, Eva Swanson.
Survivors are his wife, Irene, daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Curtis Sachau of Charter Oak; five grandchildren, Craig, Christi, Clinton Sachau and Tracie and Tonya Lindsey; four great-grandchildren, Chris and Shawn Baldwin, Nathan Kinnetz and Kelsie Norton; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
