Obituary from The Republican Press newspaper dated Thursday, April 17, 1930:

John Franklin Clough who passed very suddenly to the new life on April 8th, 1930 at the age of 70 years, was born October 3rd, 1859, at Bluffton, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Of the five sons and one daughter of Gardner and Laura Joslin Clough, he was next to the youngest, one brother being younger. The first six and a half years of his life were spent in Winneshiek and Clayton counties, where his father and mother had settled in the early 50's making the journey westward from Vermont in the service of the Union army. At the close of the Civil War his father returned to the family and in the spring of 1866 they moved to the Little Sioux of Buena Vista county. For the rest of his 70 years Mr. Clough was a resident of this county, making him one of the oldest settlers here. For thirty five years he lived on the old homestead farm, taking over the responsibility of the farm, with his younger brother William, when only seventeen years of age. For several years the brothers gave their time and energies to the cultivation of the home place and brought it under a high state of improvement. In 1900 he purchased and located on a quarter section in Lee Township, which he farmed until he retired to Sioux Rapids in 1918; and Sioux Rapids remained his home until his death.

On the first of September, 1886, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Nettie Langdon Blount, and to this union were born three children; Nellie Augusta Ritchards, now of Elk Falls, Kansas, Isa Emily Lauman, now of Sioux Rapids, and Aura Blanche Jacobsen, now of Mitchell, South Dakota, all of whom with their mother, survive him. He is also survived by four brothers, Fernando of Elk Falls, Kansas, Aldine of Salem, Oregon, Fred of Bryant, South Dakota and Will of Laurens, Iowa. Also surviving him are two step-children, Clyde Blount of Sioux Rapids and Belle Pewsey of Calvin, North Dakota and eight grandchildren.

In addition to being a successful farmer for many years and a believer in Buena Vista County's brand of prosperity, he was a devoted lover of his home and his family. In his later years he found a wonderful joy in the companionship of his grandchildren to whom he was greatly attached. He has often remarked: "There are mighty few men who enjoy their homes more than I do." And this remark of his is a good measure of the great interest of his life.

Family members traveling here to attend the funeral services held last Friday afternoon from the home were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Jacobsen and son, Bobby of Mitchell, South Dakota, Mrs. W. Ritchards of Elk Falls, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Clough of Cherokee, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Clough of Mason City and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Clough of Laurens.
