Svend Poulsen, 90, of Storm Lake, passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.
Svend Aage, the son of Martin and Margarete (Madsen) Poulsen, was born Aug. 23, 1910, in Ribe, Denmark.
He was baptized and confirmed at the Ribe Domekirk in Ribe, Denmark. Prior to coming to the United States in 1929, he was a barber. He came to Newell and worked as a farm hand until he began farming on his own in 1943.
On Feb. 22, 1943, he was united in marriage to Gladys Hansen. The couple farmed southeast of Newell for 26 years and then moved to a farm northeast of Newell. In 1977, Mr. Poulsen retired and the couple moved to Storm Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents of Ribe, Denmark; one daughter Elaine Luvaas of Denison; four brothers: Marius and Einer of Denmark; Paul and Chris of Newell; three sisters: Louise and Meta of Denmark and Kristine of Newell.
Mr. Poulsen is survived by his wife Gladys; one granddaughter; one son-in-law Louis Luvaas of Denison; nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Poulsen will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Rev. Thomas Hagen officiating.
Visitation will be held after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Newell.
