Arthur W. Grundmeier - Mar. 17, 1921 - July 3, 2008

Arthur W. Grundmeier, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, July 3, 2008, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Arthur Wilbert Grundmeier was born on March 17, 1921, to August and Marie (Ploeger) Grundmeier in Buena Vista County. The family moved back to the farm in Eden Township, Sac County, where he went to school.

On July 10, 1944, Art married Arlene Bernhardt at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller. They had four children: Ann, Barbara, Carol and Dennis. They lived 51 years on the same farm in Eden Township where he also raised livestock. In 1995, they moved to Emerald Park, and then in 2007, they moved to Lake Point Villa in Storm Lake.

Art was a member of Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Adult Choir, and the Pinochle Couple Card Club for 58 years. He also spent many hours playing cards with his grandkids and was an avid reader and also enjoyed bowling, horseshoes and carpentry. In addition, Art delivered Meals on Wheels, was a member of the A.S.C. Board in Sac County, Director of St. Joseph Church, eucharist minister at St. Joseph Catholic Church and on the Schaller/Alta Elevator Board. He enjoyed watching sports, especially his grandchildren.

Those surviving include his wife, Arlene Grundmeier; daughters: Ann and Carol Grundmeier of Storm Lake and Barbara (Rich) Jorgensen; his son, Dennis (Sharmin) Grundmeier of Schaller; grandchildren: Cari (Kyle) Fulcher, Chris Jorgensen, Craig, Jon, Allison and Roxanne Grundmeier; great granddaughters: Ellie and Emily Fulcher; sister, Gladys (Don) Kestel; brother, Mel (Agnes) Grundmeier; brothers-in-law: Bob Bernhardt of Clarion, Iowa, Jim (Ilene) Bernhardt of Dike, Iowa, Wes (Allie) Bernhardt of Odebolt, Iowa, Richard (Margaret) Bernhardt of Leola, Pennsylvania and LaDon (Norma) Bernhardt of Florissant, Missouri; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, August and Marie Grundmeier; brothers: Clarence (infant), Ervin Grundmeier and his wife Mildred, and Harold Grundmeier; sister, Viola and Curtis Dills; sister-in-law, Lois Bernhardt; and infant grandson, Nicholas Jorgensen.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Schaller, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 3-8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2008, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake with the family present from 6-8:00 p.m. There will be a Legion of Mary Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m.
