Helen Dorn - July 19, 1925 - July 2, 2008

Helen Dorn, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at her home in Storm Lake.

Helen Arlene Sloth was born on July 19, 1925, in Carroll, Iowa, to Chris and Bertha Sloth. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. She attended school in Carroll where she was active in school activities, especially playing basketball. Following graduation, Helen enrolled in and graduated from Business School in Des Moines, Iowa.

In 1947, Helen was united in marriage to Julius Jacobs in Carroll, Iowa. This union was blessed with two sons: Stephen and Gary. Soon after they were married, Helen and Julius moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. After the untimely death of Julius in 1950, Helen moved her family to Storm Lake, Iowa. In 1958, Helen married Eugene R. Dorn in Storm Lake. They had one daughter, Susan. Eugene died in 1976.

Helen worked for B.V. Abstract and Mortgage Company for many years and later worked for the Buena Vista County Auditor’s office. She was a member of WA-TAN-YE and the Buena Vista County Historical Society as well as a board member of the Harker House. Helen loved to be busy and was an avid volunteer for many community causes. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting and sewing. She adored her cats and loved a good book. In addition, Helen was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. She was a member of United Methodist Women, taught Sunday school, and in later years, Helen volunteered in the church office.

Those left the cherish her memory include her son, Dr. Gary Jacobs and his wife, Dr. Marianne Jacobs, of Berthoud, Colorado, and their children, Christopher and Alexia Jacobs; her daughter, Susan Thayer of Lakeside, Iowa, and her children, Kimberly, Kristin and Kevin Thayer; her late son, Stephen’s children, Shane and Seth Jacobs of Crosby, Minnesota; special friends, Bob Thayer and JoAn and Norm Lund; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her two husbands; her son, Stephen Jacobs; and her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and John Hanigan.

Memorial Services for Mrs. Dorn will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. The Reverends Jamie Cutler and Jerry E. Oakland will officiate. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

There will be no visitation.
