Jayn Owen - Sept. 19, 1918 - July 6, 2008
Jayn Owen, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Methodist Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.
Jayn Elizabeth Mittelstadt was born September 19, 1918, in Storm Lake, the daughter of George and Grace (Hughes) Mittelstadt. She received her education in the Storm Lake Community School and graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1935.
On March 10, 1940, Jayn was united in marriage to E. E. “Buck” Owen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple was blessed with three children: John, Sandy and Thomas.
Jayn and Buck raised their family in Storm Lake where she was active in the community. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, a 30-year member of Wa-Tan-Ye, a past president of the Iowa Hospital Auxiliary, a past member of the board of directors of the Iowa Women’s Golf Association and the Storm Lake Library, and a member of the Storm Lake Schools Advisory Board.
Jayn enjoyed sewing, reading, knitting and playing golf. She liked all types of sporting events, especially those in which her children and grandchildren participated. She was always ready to pick up a hand of cards, and she especially liked playing Bridge and Pitch.
Jayn’s family was always her first priority, however, and she treasured the time she spent with her husband and children. In later years, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, John (Jean) Owen of Storm Lake; her daughter, Sandy Campbell of Columbus, Ohio; her son, Thomas (Maria) Owen of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren: Beth (Tom) Manthe of Chaska, Minnesota; John (Jody) Owen of Brookings, South Dakota; Amy Owen of Storm Lake; Jennifer (Will) Fahey of Chappaqua, New York; Heidi (Kyle) Maroun of Charlotte, North Carolina; Jayn Owen of New York, New York; Beowulf Owen and Cambrian Owen, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico; seven great-grandchildren; her brother, James (Pat) Mittelstadt of Storm Lake; her sister, Marjorie Megson of Orland Park, Illinois; extended family and a host of friends.
Jayn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, E.E. “Buck” Owen in 1991; and four siblings: Esther, George, Don and Dean.
Memorial service Mrs. Owen will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Private family burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
