Jack Barber - Dec. 2, 1934 - July 3, 2008

Minister Jack Archie Barber entered into the kingdom of Heaven on July 3, 2008, at the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa, after a 9-year battle with cancer. He was 73 years old.
Jack was born December 2, 1934, in Spencer, Iowa, to Archie William and Alice Elizabeth Barber. He was the oldest of 10 children. He is survived by his wife, Lucille of 49 years, his twin daughters, Beth (Clinton) Easterday of Wichita, Kansas, and Becky (Andrew) Bear of Hanover, Maine, and his son, Timothy (Shiela) Barber of Palisade, Colorado. Jack had 9 grandchildren.
He attended school in Storm Lake, Laurens and Montana. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1954. He was very active in football and track. Jack served in the Army from November 1954 to February 1958. He was in the 11th Airborne Division and made 21 parachute jumps. He was stationed in Germany. Jack made his decision to become a Minister while in the Army and became a Chaplain’s Assistant.
Jack attended the Minnesota Bible College and earned a Bachelor of Sacred Literature degree in 1962. He was ordained as a Minister at the Storm Lake Church of Christ in 1963. He attended the Nebraska Christian College and earned a Bachelors of Arts Ministerial Degree as well as a Bachelor of Theology Degree in 1967. Jack also attended Pacific Christian College and earned a Master of Arts in Ministry degree in 1991.
Jack ministered at the Bagley Church of Christ in Bagley, Iowa, Sheldon Church of Christ in Sheldon, Iowa, Morrison Church of Christ in Morrison, Illinois, Palisade Christian Church in Palisade, Colorado, for 29 years and the Storm Lake Church of Christ in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was also the Chaplain of the Palisade Police Force, Civil Air Patrol and Tyson Foods.
Jack received the following awards in service to his Lord and community: Lion of the Year 1979-1980, Officer of the Year/Palisade Police Dept. 1986, Law Enforcement Officer of the Year 1987, Citizen of the Year Award from the Town of Palisade 1994, Civil Air Patrol Squadron Chaplain of the Year 1994, Civil Air Patrol Squadron Chaplain of the Year Colorado Wing, Rocky Mountain Region 2000. He received the rank of Captain in the CAP.
Other members of his family who will cherish his memory include his brothers: Douglas Barber and Jim (Sydney) Barber; sisters: Dianne (Don) Sliefert, Judy Tobin, Nita (Gary) Zitzman and Suzanne Koehler; grandchildren: Tia (Matt) Ashley, Joshua Easterday, Daniel Moore, Thomas Moore, Austin Bear, Samantha Ames, Brian, Brooke and Colton Barber; mother-in-law, Dorthea Newell; extended family and a host of friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Glenn Newell; his siblings: Sandra Barber, Marlene O’Dell and Bill Barber.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Storm Lake Church of Christ. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery with Military Rites by the Alta VFW Post #6172.
Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2008, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends from 5-6:00 p.m.
