Eugene Wood, 75, of Auburn Calif., formerly of Storm Lake, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, in Auburn following a brief illness.
Eugene, the son of Russell James and Sarah Helen (Cambron) Wood, was born Dec. 15, 1924, in Gowrie. All of his schooling was in Storm Lake, including one semester at Buena Vista College, before being drafted into the United States Army in early 1943.
On June 25, 1943, he was united in marriage to Virginia Ruth Jones of Storm Lake.
Mr. Wood served as a medic during World War II and participated in the first landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. He served in the Army and Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 and in the Air Force Reserves until 1962.
He returned to Buena Vista College and graduated in 1948. He then attended the University of Iowa and Drake University where he completed work in Zoology.
Mr. Wood worked for over 25 years in medical equipment sales and hospital design and contracting, both in the United States and abroad. As vice president of international sales, he was senior project manager for the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Virginia on July 9, 1991.
Mr. Wood is survived by one son Robert Virgil of Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter and her husband Dorinda Gene and Ronald Gregg of San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law Virgil Jones and his wife Doris of Storm Lake; one sister-in-law Wilma Chapman and her husband David Chapman of Taylorsville, N.C.; numerous extended family members and friends.
Memorial services for Mr. Wood will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Rev. Todd Schlitter of Storm Lake United Methodist Church will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service.
Masonic rites will be conducted by members of Jewell Masonic Lodge Number 309 of Storm Lake.
Burial, with full military honors by Amvets Post Number 66, will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery.
