Hazel Blum, age 87, of Alta, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 3, 2008, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Hazel Edith Delbridge Johnson Blum was born March 11, 1921, to Fred Christian Delbridge and LaVina (Bitter) Delbridge at their home near Storm Lake in Washington Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa, where her parents farmed. At an early age, they moved to a farm south of Sulphur Springs in Providence Township in Buena Vista County. Hazel attended Providence School for her entire education. She graduated in 1938. She was active in sports, music, 4-H and church as a youth.
Hazel was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sulphur Springs and was baptized into the Christian faith on April 12, 1936.
She was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake on April 14, 1946.
On January 21, 1941, Hazel was united in marriage to Johnnie Paul Johnson in Aurelia, Iowa. To this union, two children were born: a daughter, Jean Marion and a son, Kenneth Paul. Hazel and Johnnie raised their family and farmed 32 years on a farm south of Storm Lake in Sac County. She enjoyed the outdoors and enjoyed helping with the farm work.
On January 31, 1972, Hazel and Johnnie moved to their home in Storm Lake because of Johnnie’s failing health. Johnnie died of a heart attack on July 29, 1972. On January 25, 1977, Hazel married Clifford Blum. Clifford died April 23, 1991.
Hazel was especially interested in her children’s activities. She was a 4-H leader for five years and President of St. John Lutheran Ladies Aid for two years.
Hazel always enjoyed being busy. She worked as a waitress, a clerk, and later as a housekeeper at Buena Vista Hospital for 14 years.
Left to cherish her memory her daughter, Jean, widow of Dean Brechwald, of Alta, Iowa; her son, Kenneth, and his wife, Marcia Johnson, of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren: Ryan Johnson, Robb Brechwald, Lisa Johnson, Travis Brechwald, Megan Stoulil; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Fern Plumhoff of Sun City West, Arizona; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Preceding Hazel in death were her parents, Fred Debridge and Lavina (Bitter) Delbridge; her husbands, Johnnie Johnson and Clifford Blum; and her sisters: Viola Spooner, Stella Mahan, Mae Van Citters and Anna Wood.
Funeral services for Mrs. Blum will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Bruce Lesemann officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2008, from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present.
