Lora Hartje - Nov. 1, 1922 - Aug. 6, 2008

Lora Hartje, age 85, of Albert City, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Lora Caroline Alma Martha Hartje was born November 1, 1922, to Henry and Marie (Williams) Hartje in Lincoln Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa. She was baptized November 26, 1922, by Pastor Frank Albrecht in the Zion Lutheran Church, Grant Township, rural Storm Lake, Iowa. She attended Zion Lutheran school and was confirmed March 21, 1937, by Pastor William Schuelke.

Lora lived with her parents and helped care for them in their sickness. After her parents passed away, she lived with her sister, Esther, and Merlyn and family on the same family farm. She was very thankful that Merlyn and Esther always told her it was to be her home. Lora did housework and helped others with housework when they needed help. She loved working in her garden and spent many hours keeping it weed free. Additionally, Lora watched over the farm and enjoyed helping with any chores and gladly prepared many meals, especially during the harvest season.

After Merlyn passed away on April 11, 1983, Lora helped her sister, Esther, with the work. She enjoyed doing babysitting for the children.

After Esther’s marriage to Harold Lussman on July 14, 1991, Lora lived alone on the farm. Lora was very thankful that Harold and Esther took her to church and called her to visit in the evening. They always saw to it that Lora was always taken care of in a very special way.

After Esther passed, Lora was blessed with great help from nephews and their wives: Dale and Sandy Armstrong, Glen and Carolyn Armstrong, and Gary and Gail Armstrong. Carolyn took her to Bible class and church and brought groceries for her. Dale would always pick up some food and bring it out to her. Gary always went to the grocery store to pick up fruit for her when they came to visit from Bedford, Iowa. Glen would stop in just to check on her and brings eats for her. Lora wanted to mention in this obituary that she was thankful for all her nieces and nephews and their families for their many kind deeds. They would include, in addition to those already mentioned: Orlando and Lois Leimer, Bill and Ladene Chambers, Lavon Richardson, Ivan and LeAnn Klein, Delores Witte and Willis Wellmann. Although Lora was their aunt, she was very much a mother and grandmother.

Preceding Lora in death were her parents, Henry and Marie Hartje; two brothers, William Hartje and Albert Hartje; two sisters, Irene Rathke and Esther Armstrong Lussman; one sister-in-law, Elsie Hartje; and two brothers-in-law, Paul Rathke and Merlyn Armstrong.

She leaves to mourn one brother-in-law, Harold Lussman; her nieces and nephews and their families, all of whom were very dear to her; extended family and many friends.

Funeral services for Ms. Hartje will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake, Iowa. Burial will be in the Zion Church Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 8, 2008, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends.
