Margery J. Mason, 79, a lifelong Storm Lake business woman and community servant, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at the Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake.

Margery Jean, the daughter of Earl W. and Ruby (Brinkman) Adams, was born May 2, 1921, on the family century farm near Peru, Neb. She attended country school and graduated from Peru High School in 1938.

She then taught in country schools in Nemaha County, Neb., prior to her marriage.

On July 6, 1942, she married Roger C. Mason in Spickard, Mo., The couple made their first home in Storm Lake. They purchased the Storm Lake Coast-to-Coast store in 1970, which they owned and operated until their retirement.

Mrs. Mason was a dedicated member of the Alta Church of Christ. She had served as a Sunday School teacher for 27 years and had been Sunday School superintendent and deaconess. She also held a number of other offices. She was active as a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She served on the Gingerbread House Committee and the Storm Lake Area Arts Council. She was a past president of B.P.W. and was crowned "Woman of the Year."

Love for children led her and her friend Rita Fertig to establish the Happy Bear Program to help children who had been sexually abused and to teach abuse awareness to other children. Sponsored by a grant, they worked with the Buena Vista County Child Abuse Prevention team and assisted the Iowa State Department of Human Services. For their years of service they were given a special community service award by then Governor Terry Branstad.

She worked as a volunteer for the Buena Vista County Hospital Auxiliary in the coffee and gift shop and also at the Storm Lake Senior Citizens Center. For many years, in an effort to raise funds for Gingerbread House, she was the top salesperson of the July 4 Star Spangled Spectacular button campaign. She and the late Oscar Baumann waged a friendly battle each June to see who could out sell the other.

Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on March 4, 1995; one son Mark Mason and one brother Ross Adams.

She is survived by one son Marty Mason and his wife Candy of Riverton, Wyo.; one daughter Beneta Mason Witt and her husband Ronald of Estes Park, Colo.; one brother Garth Adams and his wife Gloria of Merrimack, N.H; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and numerous other extended family members and a host of friends.

Memorial services for Mrs. Mason will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Alta Church of Christ.

A family graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Mrs. Mason's grandsons: Bryon, Matt and Todd Mason, Matt Peters, Greg Christy and Scott Collignon.

Friends may call at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake anytime on Monday, and the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established.
