Shirley Mathews, 65, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning.

Shirley Jeannette, the daughter of J.C. and Sybil (Carrington) Holster, was born Dec. 15, 1934, in Naples, Texas. As a young child she moved with her mother and grandparents to Roswell, N.M., where she attended school. She completed the 10th grade there and earned her GED later in life.

On June 7, 1950, she was united in marriage to George Robert Mathews in Roswell, N.M. Her husband was in the United States Air Force and the couple lived in various locations throughout the United States and abroad. When Mr. Mathews was honorably discharged from the service in May of 1974, the family settled in Truesdale. Following the death of her husband in December of 1978, she continued to live in Truesdale until moving to Storm Lake for a couple of years and then to Denison. She then moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where she lived for a number of years before settling in Manning in 1991. Her most recent move in 1998 brought her to Atlantic.

Mrs. Mathews was a member of the United Methodist Church in Manning. She enjoyed life, going to casinos, eating out, shopping, playing cards, watching television and going places with her roommate and good friend, Sandie Roecker.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Mrs. Mathews is survived by her children: Thomas and his wife Amy Mathews of Blue Springs, Mo., Barbara and her husband Fred Perez of Albuquerque, N.M., Debra and her husband Allan Muesburger of Tyler, Minn., Tracy and his wife Nancy Mathews of Storm Lake, and Gary Mathews of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mathews will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Manning with Rev. Larry McAlpine officiating.

Casketbearers are Tom Mathews, Gary Mathews, Shane Perez, Fred Perez, Allan Muesburger and George Mathews. Burial will be at Buena Vista Memorial Park in Storm Lake. The Ohde Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.
