Marianna Meier, 89, of Waterloo, died Monday, April 12, 2010, at the Pavilion at Friendship Village.
Marianna was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Galva, the daughter of Clarence and Mildred Whealen Elk. She graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1938 and Iowa State University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Food and Nutrition. Marianna joined the Army Medical Corps in 1944 and served two years as a First Lieutenant including a year in Blandford, England.
Marianna's career was in Food and Nutrition. She was a dietitian at various hospitals including Allen Memorial Hospital from 1958 to 1971. She also served as a dietitian consultant to area nursing homes for 10 years, retiring in 1982.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she volunteered with Ladies Sewing and taught Sunday School. She also volunteered at Salvation Army and with Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Friendship Village Auxiliary and the American Dietetics Association.
Marianna married Marshall Meier on March 14, 1946, in Storm Lake. He died Dec. 15, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother, Don Elk.
Marianna is survived by her daughter Jan Wilson of University City, Mo.; son Marshall "Chip" (Arlene) Meier of Okauchee, Wisc.; four grandchildren: Elizabeth Wilson, Rob (Erin) Wilson, Chad (Malissa) Meier, Kirstin Meier; and three great grandchildren: Lily Parker, Annabelle Wilson, and Lola Meier.
Services will be held on Friday, April 23, at 2:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Memorials may be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Salvation Army, Friendship Village Auxiliary, or Quakerdale.
