Mr. Porath passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Houston, Texas, while traveling to Iowa to spend Christmas with his family.

Gregory Kent, the son of Francis and Florence (Carlson) Porath, was born July 24, 1954, at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake. He was baptized at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on Aug. 29, 1954. He grew up on a farm near Albert City with his parents, brother and two sisters. He was confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on May 25, 1969.

He attended Albert City-Truesdale Community School where he graduated in May of 1972. He then attended Luther College in Decorah and received a bachelor's degree in Business in May of 1976. He did post graduate work at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, and Drake University in Des Moines. He worked in Des Moines for Payless Cashway Incorporated and transferred with the company to Houston, Texas, in 1986.

Mr. Porath was currently employed with Wilson-Texas Mill Supply as an inventory control manager in their product distribution division. He was an avid reader and had acquired an extensive book collection. He also enjoyed golfing, working with stained glass, fine dining and gourmet cooking.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Porath, his grandparents, John and Alma Carlson and Alex and Alma Porath.

Mr. Porath is survived by his mother Florence; one brother Doug and his fiance Phyllis Hyde of Waverly; two sisters: Cynthia and her husband Gary Lenhart of Pine, Colorado, and Diane and her husband Neal McIntosh of Mounds View, Minnesota; two nieces: Jenny Lenhart Penner and her husband Chad and Callie McIntosh; three nephews: Heath Porath, Chris Lenhart and Cody Lenhart; two aunts: Florence Anderson and Verva Carlson; three uncles: Carl Carlson, Marlin Anderson and N.K. "Bob" Nesheim; many cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Gregory Porath, 46, were held Saturday, Dec. 23, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Pastor Duane Olson officiated at the 2 p.m. service.

Honorary pallbearers were Steu Anderson, Walt Nesheim, Deb Travis, Gary Griffin, Todd Lines and Sean Burke. Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
